Learning to win

Hello everyone,

My son races go-karts, and this past weekend, he finished 1st in the Northeast Regional Rotax Challenge. As I was watching him, it struck me how long he had come since picking up this sport only 2 years ago. It isn't so much that he has learnt to drive faster, or how to maneuver through a corner, but how to compete and win. Improving hard/technical skills is one thing, but improving his mental approach and tackling the other competitors is a completely different thing. He also benefited from learning from those who observed him race - as his perspective from the driver's seat is not always the same as someone watching from the galleries.

I was thinking of parallels to the business world. This is probably why the best ideas, product and solutions don't always win. It is important to understand the bigger picture and build a business in a more holistic sense. It is important to know the rules of the game, the strengths and weakness of the fellow competitors, the need/requirements of the customers, and above all, developing a winning attitude. It is also vital to have people who are observing and helping you grow. They can bring a different view that may be vital to your improvement.
